Windsor is centrally
located on major highways and just a short drive from the Outer Banks.
Founded in 1768, the town is located on the banks of the Cashie River
and remains today much as it did in its heyday and is one of the most
interesting small historically significant towns in the region. Please

Hope
Plantation
Hope Plantation
is located just four miles west of Windsor on NC 308. Built in 1803 by
Governor David Stone, the plantation is listed on the National Register
of Historic Places. Thousands of visitors come to see the plantation each
year and join in on the festive events that are sponsored by the Hope
Plantation. Hope Plantation features a historic tour of the Hope Mansion,
the King-Bazemore House, Samuel Cox House and the Roanoke Heritage Center.

Freeman
Hotel
The hotel
building was relocated from the center of downtown to its present site
along the Cashie river. In the mid-20th century, this building was first
used as a hotel and then as an apartment building. It is the present home
of the Windsor/Bertie County Chamber of Commerce, the Roanoke River Partners,
and other local non-profit agencies.

Windsor
Historic District & Walking Tour
The Historic
Windsor Walking Tour is an enjoyable step back through history with beautiful
architecturally detailed homes. A study of the historical figures responsible
for their construction and their impact on Bertie County history is also
a part of the self-guided tour. A number of 18th and 19th century buildings
remain in Windsor and the downtown district is listed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
